For hundreds of years, salt deposits underneath Seneca Lake have been mined and exploited for human benefit by a company known as U.S. Salt. Currently, U.S. Salt is the operating company of the salt mines located along the Southwest shore of Seneca Lake, in the Town of Reading, NY. As the pockets of salt are mined and brought to the surface, these enormous caverns are left behind. Although these abandoned caverns are harmless by themselves, they are starting to get a lot of attention from all types of people. A Texas based energy company, Crestwood Equity Partners L.P., has recently purchased U.S. Salt with the intent to utilize the abandoned mines, but, their plan seems to be very controversial. They plan to bring liquid propane gas and other by-products of the fracking process from Pennsylvania and store it in these empty and unlined caves. They plan for this site to be the main storage hub for all of the New England states. Crestwood claims that this plan won’t harm the environment and that it will bring an economic boost to the area, however, many people have their doubts.
